Montgomery County is a county in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is the most populous county in the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area; its population in 2000 was 223,510. Montgomery County was established on December 6, 1816. It is named for Lemuel P. Montgomery, a military officer killed at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in the War of 1812. The city of Montgomery, which is the county seat, is named for Richard Montgomery,[citation needed] an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City,
Canada. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 800 square miles (2,071 km²), of which 790 square miles (2,045 km²) are land and 10 square miles (26 km²) (1.25%) are water. Montgomery County has a very colorful background. Settlers first began to populate the area in the early 1800s.
